How to fly with car seat and buggy?

I am travelling longhaul to Thailand and Malaysia (a total of 6 flights) with my DH and 7 month old DD later this week. We have to take a car seat for travelling with family out there. We have a cheapish Maxi-cosi buggy that the car seat works with. I think I want to take the buggy as well as the car seat because it lies flat and has a big sunshade so would be better for naps and sleeping in whilst we are at restaurants in the evening etc. DD has a 10kg baggage allowance plus either fully collapsible pushchair or car seat. If we take both one will be counted in her baggage allowance.
So should we take both or just the car seat and legs? If we take both when we can we check them in? I don't want them to get damaged but I think they will only let us gate check either the car seat and legs or the buggy and legs (they collapse together). We can use an ergo carrier in the airport as well if it helps. Thanks Smile
