do I need a hire car in Mallorca?

We are staying in Cala d'or in Mallorca in October half term with DCs. The hotel has play areas and swimming pools, including indoor pool.
There is a coach transfer available, but can anyone who has been to Mallorca give me advice; is there enough sights to see that would merit the extra expense and hassle of hiring a car? Cheers.

I always like a car.

But there are buses.

You should get the train to Soller.

Inland Mallorca is absolutely beautiful and well worth exploring in a car. I mean - there's no real need as such, but it is lovely. The roads are pretty good, too.

It depends on the weather. When we went one May half term we were very unlucky with the weather and experienced a lot of rain. We had booked a car for three days, but kept it for 10 days in the end because we were staying just outside Alcudia where there isn't much to do if it is raining.

The island is beautiful, especially the north and west and we saw many places we wouldn't have seen if it had been hot and sunny all the time. We also found that it could be miserable in Alcudia, but nicer elsewhere, so we chased the sun round the island. I felt sorry for those people who hadn't hired a car or couldn't drive because they spent many a rainy day in a cafe feeling miserable.

Definitely get a car, so many great places. I second soller, great place. Getting around is so easy. Even if you hire one for a few days.

That's a great idea, we could get the bus for ease on arrival, then just get a small car, not worrying about luggage, for a few days. Mumsnet to the rescue!
