Has anyone flown with Norwegian to LA?

How was it?

It works out around £1000 cheaper (return) than BA or Virgin for 2 adults and one child. We need to fly direct as ds has AS and won't cope with changes and transit.

Thanks Thanks

This might help

Cheap is not always cheerful however, buy cheap and pay twice. Would use a different carrier like the ones you've mentioned.

NoRunAround · 12/06/2014 08:34

Wow! Some of the reviews are beyond scary, will give them a wide berth!

We've flown Norwegian a few times - only short haul though. Very happy with everything - have no concerns about them from my experiences.

It's a new service scheduled to start in July, from what I understand. Read in the newspaper today that the legacy carriers (BA, Virgin et al) are trying to impede the introduction of the Gatwick/JFK service by complaining to the US government regulators. Same would apply to Los Angeles, I'd imagine. So there's some doubt whether the service will proceed as planned. Sorry, can't find an online link to what I read, but it's in today's "i" on page 24!

Thanks Optimist. I found the article on a proposed route to JFK www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/regulators-no-longer-the-masters-as-monopolies-turn-screw-on-innovation-9530175.html?origin=internalSearch

What about Air New Zealand? They look good?

I've flown with Norwegian in Europe and it was fantastic. Couldn't fault it.

When you look at those reviews the problem seems to be with transatlantic flights. It appears that it was advertised to be using the brand new Dreamliner, but the aircraft/provider was switched at the last minutes and thats where all the complaints are.

So I wonder if it is an issue with Norwegian or one that is connected to all the faults that the Dreamliner had which meant they couldn't use the plane they intended and service suffered as a result.

The question for me, would be is the Dreamliner now in service...

Only flown shorthaul, but I love it. The staff were friendly, it was sooo comfy, it was probably rhe best flying experience of my life but I'm an Easyjet/Ryanair type person, which I suppose makes a difference.

I flew to LA via Newark with United, they were fine.

Optimist1 · 12/06/2014 19:05

Air New Zealand are very good indeed!

Vagndidit · 13/06/2014 10:46

We flew direct to LAX with BA in April on a shiny, new Airbus A380. airplane geek

It wasn't much more expensive than United or other carriers but felt very luxurious (even in cattle class)

SolomanDaisy · 13/06/2014 10:50

Air New Zealand are great.

Tinkerball · 13/06/2014 15:18

Vagndidt that sounds good! We have already been to a travel agent as we want to go back to California next year, he's contacting us when flights are released. We live in Scotland and flew to San Francisco via Newark last time but he's going to price us up BA direct flights from Heathrow, I just thought it would be hideously more expensive!

Sidge · 13/06/2014 15:58

I flew Norwegian recently but only short haul. It was fine, no frills as expected but I did have WiFi at 38,000 feet!

Not sure if I'd fly long haul with them, it would depend on the provision eg entertainment, baggage, meals etc.

Tinkerball

BAs website is generally very customer friendly to browse, you could easily book flights and accommodation on their website without using a travel agent at all.

Their flights currently go up to the end of May 2015. I would keep checking it every few weeks.

friends flew with Norweigian from Osla to LA this April - they said it was great, brand new plane, lovely cabin crew, better than BA in general

I haven't tried them yet (live in LA and fly back to UK fairly frequently) but between BA, Virgin and Air New Zealand, ANZ wins everytime for us on cost, comfOrtability, customer service - EVERYTHING
