Hiring 7 seater in France

We're going to Ile de Re for hols this summer, and cost of 7-seater hire is so high! Double the price of a sedan. Anyone have any suggestions? We've tried the standard companies

Do you need a car on the ile de re? I've never been, but my parents have. I believe it is quite small, there is a good bus service (google it!) and cycling is de rigeur.

You can certainly get there by bus from La Rochelle as i have investigated this in the past.
