New York, New York State, Boston, Maine

Planning a trip next year. I want to go to New York, dh wants more of a road trip. Ds will be 9. How much will there be to keep ds entertained?

I grew up in upstate NY and spent mostly my adult life in the city so know this area well. If you are planning on driving from NYC to Boston you won't go through NY state, but through Connecticut and Massachusetts. It can be a long congested drive (do not try it on a Friday for Sunday), and rental cars cost a fortune out of NYC. It might be best to take Amtrak from NYC to Boston. From there you can rent a car and drive up the coast. It is beautiful. Boston is a great city for kids. Portsmouth, NH, and Bangor, Maine, are, too. The beaches all the way up the coast are lovely if you are going in warm weather. That being said, Americans and Brits seem to have a very different idea of what constitutes a long car ride. I think this trip sounds great, but most of my friends in the UK would go crazy spending so much time in the car.
