Planning a trip to Athens for my 40th in Feb. very excited - never been there, or indeed, to Greece! 10yo is thrilled as he is very into Greek mythology (good old Percy Jackson..,) so definitely want to visit some of the ancient sites - the acropolis, and thinking about a trip to the Temple of Poseiden- but would love any other ideas for places to see, places to eat...
Thanks

ooh, I know the person to ask. Not sure if she is still online at this time of night. Hang on

I spent 5 years living in Athens.

Apart from the Acropolis, it's worth going up Lycavittos for the fantastic view.

Obviously, the National History Museum - you can take the Metro to get quite close, it's a short walk from the station, and the Benaki Museum

The ancient Agora is quite interesting too - and you must look at all the artefacts on display at the Metro stations, they were all dug up in the vicinity of the stations.

Hang on, I'll be back in a bit with more

Ok, I'm back. I didn't have children when I lived in Athens, I must admit I've never really thought about where to take children there.

Eating out: I hope you're not a vegetarian, because if you are you will find it hard! If not, then go to Ta Vlahika, there's a whole row of very typical tavernas, the sort that actual Greeks go to, not just for tourists.

I don't know if it's still there (lots of restaurants have closed with the recession), but in Kalogiron Square (Dafni Metro station) there was a lovely old fashioned taverna I used to visit regularly. Good food, simple fare but very tasty, typically Greek. It was called "Ladokolla", and it was just past the bus terminal outside the Metro station. Highly recommended!

Just noticed you're not going till Feb. I'll have another think about it (am doing 3 things at once here!) and come back to you in a day or two!
