Three days in Chicago - what to do?

Am spending three days with a friend in Chicago in a few weeks and looking for ideas of what to do. Will obviously be doing the obligatory shopping but apart from that we are thinking of spending the first day doing a boat tour (an architectural one of the river rather than the lake, I think)and then doing p.m. in Millennium Park and the Art Institute. All suggestions welcome! Also if anyone has restaurant recommendations that would be great. We are staying in the Palmer House Hilton in the Loop and would like both casual dining and a nicer restaurant where we could dress up a bit one night. I have had the Rough Guide in my bag for months but there are so many options, it's just overwhelming!

If you are interested in architecture I think you can go on a tour of some of the Frank Lloyd Wright houses

Definately do the architectural tour it was fab and really gave you the history etc of the city. we did the lake one too and apart from getting some good photos of the whole skyline didn't really gain an awful lot more from it!
The best pizza pie in the city is a place on Rush - you can't book and you end up queing in the street but it is definately worth it. Also worth doing drinks up the Hancock Tower views are unbelievable.
Not sure if you are planning to do breakfast in the hotel but if you venture out the best place we found (and all the locals seemed to be there) was Tempo (6 E Chestnut Street) but be warned you will put on pounds and they only take cash!

The pier is a great place to hang out, and will have more going on than when we were there in April.

Ooh I want to go again now it really is a fab place

Enjoy

Thanks Bellie, I had heard the lake tours were no great shakes and someone else had recommended Tempo so that settles it - we'll have to go there!

If you go to Tempo try and get a table that is bigger than you need - i.e one for 3/4 if there are 2 of you - you will need the space believe me!!

You must go the Green Mill - fantastically cool even if you don't like jazz. Very atmospheric, great bar, one of my top tips.

I second going to Wrigley Field - again even if you think you don't like baseball it's a brilliant place and you'll have a whale of a time.

If you have time it is worth visting Oak Park, which is a suburb of Chicago full of fabulous Frank Lloyd Wright houses. Lovely to spend a couple of hours just wandering...
