Contemplating a year out travelling with DD8 and DS6

DH and I have always jokingly said we should just pack everything up and go travelling for a year with a "you only live once attitude". Just recently the discussion has got a little more serious trying to think about the practicalities. Has anyone done this? How does it work taking the kids out of school? Any advice would be appreciated before we get too carried away!

Marking my place. We are considering a year onboard a yacht with DDs (aged 4 and 5)

There was someone who did it may be around 2 years ago and posted here. I am sure it was a dad. I will see what i can find.

Channel 4 made a series about families who did this, it was really interesting. Might be worth a search to try and find those.

We did it with DSs aged 7 and 5. Was great. My biggest piece of advice: make sure you take great contraceptives: our year out was cut short so I could come home and give birth to DS3.

It was fine taking the kids out of school. They learnt lots while we were away. We had sold our house and didn't go back to the same area so didn't try to get them back into the same school.

7 years later there is plenty they remember, but it is mostly the toffe apples at Santiago airport rather than exploring Machu Picchu.
