Is Paignton zoo too far? My geography is terrible.

Paignton is about 2 1/2 hours away. Very worth the visit if you were inclined to travel that far. Newquay zoo IMO isn't worth the entrance fee compared to Paignton, however is nice for a couple of hours if you're happy to pay a tenner plus.
The Eden Project is a fantastic day out. For kids there's a massive play place at St Austell, called Kidz World I think. The Blue Reef aquarium in Newquay is nice but not a day out.
Have fun!

We went to Paradise Park 7 years ago (!) with our children who were then aged 6 and 4 and we liked it.

Have a look at the Hidden Valley Discovery Park at Launceston. This is a really good day out.
