Hi, I'm off to NYC with the husband for a few days and would love tips on where you've been that's really worth going to. Not too bothered about traditional sightseeing, we want to experience the less known but still as great.

Thanks very much!

Coney Island is fun.

Central Park is lovely. Take some time wandering around.
Circle Line cruise is a good day of seeing the whole of Manhattan and Liberty Island.
Top of the Rock/ Empire State.

Cycling round Central Park is fun.

A bit of advance planning can help to visit more unusual places, such as the Federal Reserve, which must be booked in advance, and was really interesting.

The best place we visited was the top of the Statue of Liberty, feels really strange to be looking out through the windows in the crown. Needs to be booked in advance, and no good if you don't like heights or stairs.

IMHO Top of the Rock is better than Empire State Building.

Our favourite bar was O'Lunneys on West 45th Street, near Times Square. Really friendly staff, and reasonable prices for Manhatten.

The Tick Tock diner was great for breakfast, and for a real treat, The Palm Court at The Plaza did a fantastic breakfast in lovely surroundings.

Oh, and forgot to say, if you are a foodie, Zabars on the Upper West Side is well worth a visit, huge deli type shop, fab for browsing and trying something a bit different.

And also Katz's Deli on the Lower East Side, the one from Harry Met Sally.
Good food, and fun for checking out the photos of visiting stars on the walls.

Ok, I'll shut up now!

Smith and Wolensky's is a really great, traditional NY steak restaurant. 5 Napkins Burger is ideal for a proper burger in a brilliant setting near the theatre district.

World Trade Centre memorial
Empire State
Grand Central Station (especially the main concourse and the oyster bar!).

Oh yes, Katz's Deli is fab. Corned beef on rye, yum.

The high line was definitely a highlight of my trip last year. Its an old overhead railway line that has been converted into a park. You can walk it to chelsea market and then have a mooch round there.
Brooklyn bridge at twilight.
Take the ferry to staten island for views of statue of liberty. The ferry is free and runs 24hrs.
Century 21 for great shopping.
