Car Insurance for Bosnia and Montenegro?

In about 6 weeks, we are going to drive to Slovenia and drive around the Balkans for a few weeks.
We were going to fly, but have now decided to take our own car and drive as car hire for something that takes a family of 6 is extortionate. But we have run into problems with insurance as our insurer won't cover Bosnia or Montenegro.
It's going to be an adventure...
Google suggests that we can buy ( third party?) insurance at the border to these countries but some of this information is quite old. I wondered if anyone has any experience in obtaining car insurance for these countries recently?

Hi

We travelled to Bosnia and Montenegro last year and will be doing the same again this year in mid July for 3 weeks.

Last year we had car insurance with Admiral and they issued a green card to cover us for Bosnia but were unable to cover us for Montenegro. I had heard that you could buy border insurance but was a bit nervous about it.

The Bosnia border crossing we were just waved through they didn't even check our passports never mind car docs.

Montenegro was really easy in the end; just make sure that you have all the right documentation (passports, International Driving Permits, Car documents etc..). The border control will take all the documents from you and request that you buy border insurance from an office just past the main area and that once you have bought it take it back to them and they will give you your documents back.

The cost was 15 euros.

The drawback is that i'm not quite sure what it actually covers! But we are going to risk it again this year :)

Just make sure you leave plenty of time for the border crossing queue, we waited about 2 hours, but it was well worth the wait.

Oh thank you for replying- it's great to hear from someone who has actually bought insurance at Montenegro. Now we just need to find out what to do about Bosnia!
