Recommendations for a romantic Greek Island holiday

I love the Greek Islands and travel there every summer. I've been to Kefalonia; Zante and Rhodes most recently (and Crete when I was younger). I usually avoid the more popular/commercial resorts though.

Would like to try somewhere new this summer. Ideally flying from Newcastle but not imperative. We like lovely beaches, a bit of culture, nice restaurants and bars.

Any recommendations for somewhere special?

We love the Greek Islands too. We went to Skopelos a couple of years ago which is beautiful and not commercialised ( although some touristy tours after Mamma Mia was filmed there). We flew from Birmingham into Skiathos then got the ferry over. Would love to go back.

Is there much to do on Skopelos?

We stayed in Skopelos town and went walking every day- the coast is beautiful and hired a car and went exploring. It is a pretty quiet place no major attractions but plenty of old Greek architecture and lovely quiet beaches ( and usually a welcoming taverna!)

I wouldn't recommend Skiathos for a romantic break. We stayed there last summer, having been twice before in low season and enjoyed it. This time we visited in August and it was a total Brit-fest.

Naxos is stunning. We were there in August 2011 and the sandy beaches were still quiet even though it was high season. It is possibly one of the most relaxing holidays I have had. We stayed in Plaka and most people were on the beach until 8pm (spectacular sunsets) and then strolling to the local taverna for dinner. It is very Greek - think dirt roads and non-English speaking locals - and it is all the more heavenly for it.

Santorini, without a doubt. Oia is beyond beautiful. Some pics on my profile iirc.

Lindos in Rhodes was lovely, especially if you go early in the season.

Santorini is the place of the moment for romantic coupley type holidays.

I loved Hydra, thought it was very romantic and unspoilt.

Stoopa on the mainland is lovely and so is Batsi on Andros but you have to get a ferry there.

PAXOS!!! AMAZING.

Hydra is glorious, as is Spetses.

top tip to avoid the drunken Brit crowd - pick an island without an airport.
