Flying with a 2.8 yrs on a 13hr flight need advice on

Hello I live in South Africa and will be travelling in June to Portugal with my 2.8 year old. He is not into being in a stroller/buggy how neccessary is it to tag one along?
Also with regards to car seats does anyone know if I can hire one there. I will not be hiring a car as I will be staying with family. Has anyone travelled with TAP and how were they with children?

If you want to go out in the evenings I would definitely take a buggy as I expect he'll be tired after a day of swimming and digging. He'll fall asleep in the buggy and you can wheel him about. They do tend to have car seats, yes.
