don't know about la rochelle but have had lovely holidays on il de re and il d'orelon just off la rochelle in cabins on campsites. everything provided - beds and cooking stuff etc, plus lovely beaches and pools. we drove down as we had bikes - a long way but you can fly very cheaply on easyjet etc and hire bikes there if you like.

We went to oleron a few years ago, hired. Hired a cottage through holiday lettings, drove down via euro tunnel. Fabulous island would def recommend.

We stayed at Le Pong campsite in Landevielle last summer. Fantastic area for families. Two weeks went very quickly!

We stayed in an ibis on the way down which wasn't strictly necessary but broke it up a bit.

I stayed at a gite hired through this, it wasnt in La Rochelle, about an hour away, we did go there and visit the aquarium which was lovely.

we stayed here www.bestfrenchgites.co.uk a couple of years ago - it was fab. Might not have any accommodation big enough for your group actually, but just wanted to give them a recommendation as they were great!

cest tout and olympic - any tips on cabin accommodation. Family staying at Interlude campsite.

Fly from Gatwick - easyjet, very quick flight. Can be expensive in the summer months though.

If you can manage with bags, etc., it is actually incredibly easy to get there by train - Eurostar, change at Paris and TGV to La Rochelle.
