Anyone been to Kephalonia in May?

We are thinking of visiting Kephalonia in May with our 14 month old baby.

Will it be warm enough to enjoy the beach?

Any insight will be much appreciated.

Oh I love Kephalonia.
It's gorgeous.
I am very very Envy

Dophus · 04/04/2006 13:58

What time of year have you visited?

Ermmmm

I think 1st time was June/July and second was August.

I'm sure the weather will be fine. It will still be hot but not as bad as what it can get to.
Which part are you going to?

Dophus · 04/04/2006 14:23

Possibly Lourdas - but undecided. Any recommendations?

Well I've been to Scala both times but have done lots of trips around and tbh it's all lovely.
Such lovely people there, amazing food and sights.

You can't beat Greece IMO.

zippitippitoes · 04/04/2006 14:36

I think it will be very pleasant

I've been, can't remember when though. Think September, It was still nice. Been to Zakynthos in May, was definitely hot enough to swim in sea - was baking!

Dophus · 04/04/2006 20:05

Which did you prefer - Kefalonia or Zakynthos?

My sister went in April a few years and weather was really nice - not scorching but warm enough for t-shirts.

willow2 · 04/04/2006 23:58

Zakynthos - but think it depends so much on whereabouts you are staying on each island. We were in Vassilikos in Zakynthos, which is very quiet and pretty - Kephalonia we were in the middle of nowhere at a Sunsail resort (now shut I believe) with a rubbish beach. Little local town was nice but can't remember what it was called.

pebblemum · 05/04/2006 00:42

I went to Zakynthos for my honeymoon a few years ago. We went in early june and it was very hot. We stayed in Tsilivi which was nice, plenty to do without being too hectic.

As far as I know all the greek islands are very similar temperature wise so Kephalonia in May should be lovely, hot enough for the beach but not too hot for your LO.

Dophus · 05/04/2006 08:03

It sounds lovely. I think we have decided to book som flights to kephalonia and travel around a little. Any must see recommendations?

A couple of years ago we went to Kefalonia in May and stayed \link{http://81.171.230.18/holidays/abroad/kefalonia/lourdas/287/\here in Lourdas} with our dd who was just 12 months. The resort itself is/was tiny and at the bottom of a steep hill and I mean steep! There were about 3 tavernas and the beach is pebbly and quite steeply shelving. It was a really relaxing holiday but you will need to hire a car if you are thinking of a package as it's isolated in terms of much to see.

We opted for the ground floor studio apartment big enough to fit a travel cot in(supplied by the tour operators), personally I think you would be better opting for a resort more like Lassi as a base.
hth!

It was hot when we went but not too hot!

dd was fine in a huge t-shirt and swim nappy for most of the day and slept in her vest with cotton pj bottoms, tbh the heat zonked her out so we could go out and eat in peace with her in the pushchair, but there was only a dirt track to the studios so it was a pita to use the buggy!

Dophus · 05/04/2006 15:47

Was the sea warm?

OP posts:
Lucycat · 05/04/2006 19:11

Well I'm a bit of a coward when it comes to the sea and cold, but yes, even I swam in it - a little! it was fine for dd to paddle in, but we did go right at the end of May so perhaps it had had a few weeks to warm up!

When are you thinking of going?

NatalieJane · 05/04/2006 19:17

We went to Corfu in May last year, it was lovely and warm, but again as everyone has said not too warm, the sea/pool was a lovely temperature to swim in.

Have a good trip :)

Dophus · 06/04/2006 10:44

We hve flights booked for the 14th May for two weeks. We are going to stay in a few different places.

ooh lovely, I hope you have a great time and don't forget to report back and let us know how warm the sea is - I've just made a Spinach and feta pie to have for tea - I sooooo want to go to Greece!!

frazzledrocks · 07/04/2006 21:18

We stayed at the Princess Hotel in Lassi from May 16th for two weeks (in 2004). We didn't have any children at the time and we were having an extension built during that summer, which is why we went away in May (we wanted to be home to supervise the build).

I wouldn't do it again.

We had a few nice days (about 25 degrees)and quite a few rainy cold days (and we found there wasn't much to do on the rainy days). We were within walking distance of Argostoli, but found it a bit dead out of season (season hadn't really started). It was chilly in the evening (couldn't sit outside a restaurant without wearing a coat) and the sea was too cold for swimming or even paddling really.

The hotel was lovely though.

I did like Kephalonia, but wouldn't go for a fortnight and I'd choose early september if I ever went again (we went to Skiathos in september and it was perfect). I just don't think there's much to do there.
