URGENT........Anyone been to/know EASTERN CRETE????????????/

I need to book our hol today, and it's a choice between two areas of Crete. One I'm confident will be great, but the other I'm not sure and need some advice.

We'd be staying near Zakros but further towards the coast. Apparently this is a very untouristy part of Crete, about 170 miles from the airport, but I really like the accommodation and would prefer to go there if I know the region is wonderful!

TIA Smile

puff I have been to Crete several times but neverso far over to the east.Sitia is reasonably close and I understand a pretty town. You will also be close to the palm tree beach "Finikodassos" which is lovely but can become quite quite blocked with coachloads full of tourists.

From Zakros I think you would need to hire a car to get to any other areas as on the map I am looking at there are no direct roads even to other beaches along the coast.

I guess it depends on the ages of your child(ren) and what you are really looking for from your holiday.

What is the other area that you are considering?

puff · 20/03/2006 11:39

Hurrah! Someone who can help Smile

We will definitely hire a car, whichever villa we choose.

The other place we are considering is just outside Rethymnon.

The children are 2 and 4. I know it sounds silly, but I wouldn't want to be too far from a hospital or decent size supermarket/grocery store, and am thinking Zakros is perhaps too far flung, even though the villa looks particularly nice.

Thinking about it, we want to explore quite a lot of the island, and would be more restricted in Zakros.

Also want plenty of variety for eating out.

I like quite places, dh like hustle and bustle, kids love beaches naturally, so I need to tick all those boxes too.

i have the rough guide here ( a few year s old but you know)

puff · 20/03/2006 11:51

Oh great cod - will give a more warts and all view than stuff I'm seeing on the web.

What does it say about Zakros and surrounding area? Trying to get a feel for amenities in Zakros and nearest hospital (Iknow it sounds silly, but my nephew had to be rushed to hospital in Greece, very ill and it makes me think about these things now).

I'm sure the beaches will be lovely anywhere on the island.

puff · 20/03/2006 12:05

That map is good, better than the ones I've found. Sitea's the nearest big place.

Hmm I'm thinking it's too far flung. 170 miles from airport.

Puff I am in Greece and going on what you say I would definitely go for Rethymnon. The main hospital is in Heraklion and (god forbid that you would need it) but it would be a long arduous drive there from Zakros.

You will also find far more to do if you were based more centrally. With 2 small children, believe me you will not want to be driving such distances during the day to get to different beaches etc.

I have to go and pick up my son from school now but will try to answer any other questions you may have later.HTH

PollyLogos · 20/03/2006 12:07

Ano Zakros = upper Zakros
Kato Zakros = Lower Zakros

ie a village in two parts!!

cod · 20/03/2006 12:08

aha"! like middle wallop

cod · 20/03/2006 12:08

shall i look up rethymomn?
have you looked in holidays uncovered?
who si the operator?

PollyLogos · 20/03/2006 12:09

exactly!!!

cod · 20/03/2006 12:10

beach ideal for kids
lots going on quite touristy but kids love that

puff · 20/03/2006 12:12

Oh great you two, thanks for the help, very very useful. Zakros is def too far flung.

I'm happy about the villa near Rethymron cod, but will look at the holidays uncovered website - had forgotten about that.

Might as more questions later as I'll see if there is anywhere else suitable before I finally book (although I've been at this for days, so just went to get it sorted now).
