We were in Orlando just over a week ago and when we got sick of the parks we drove to Clearwater for the day and had a lovely day relaxing on the beach. It was around 1 1/2 hours drive down the I4 but will depend on the traffic. We've also spent a few days in Cocoa beach (East coast) on other trips which was lovely too. Further down south you have Fort Lauderdale and Miami but much longer drives.

we like St Petersburg and St Pete's beach, Fort Myers area and Naples. would recommend them.

it does become more expensive by the coast if you have been used to a lovely villa in Orlando.

we always went to Orlando to start with then went and stayed by the beach. i don't think i would bother with Orlando now.

Clearwater and st Augustine are quite different. What sort of a place did you want - quiet history, lively and vibrant, a beach? Nature or 'tits and bums' as its called in my family?

I love Clearwater.
Going back in oct

We went to Clearwater about 15 years ago. It was lovely then, beautiful beaches.

You could try further up the pan handle if you can be bothered to go that far. Pensacola is really nice as is Tallahassee and the surrounding area. Clearwater is also very lovely. Most of Florida is nice (except Orlando and Kissimmee which is a bit busy IMO)

how about a bit further down - anna maria island, Sanibel/Captiva coasts - apparently the best family and shelling beaches in the US

I did a search because I need to ask the same thing, nearly.

Anyone been to Florida Keys? Any recommendations where to go/stay there? There's me and DH and our 2 DDs (8 & 4).

I've been to and would like to go back to St Pete's Beach. DH fancies a change and going to the Keys. Any recommendations?

OP - I like St Pete's Beach, found Clearwater ultra-boring, though still had a good time as it was back when it was just DH and I, and have had a great holiday in Ft Lauderdale. Miami is a bit seedy for me.
