We've never been to Lanzarote, but are considering going there in the last two weeks in August? Would love to hear other people's views.

spanking hot usually

Bubbless · 29/06/2012 15:27

ive been to lanzarote twice on holidays and had a great time
however- we had a much better time the year we hired a car for a few days, means you can really get around and see the sights as they are spread about a bit and not very acessible!

We're going in 2 weeks. Never been to the Canaries before... I hear it's not as hot as Mallorca/Portugal/Italy etc. as it has a more temperate climate, which I didn't believe until I checked the average monthly temperatures. Fingers crossed it's not too hot. We're going to the Princesa Yaiza. Suggest you find a hotel you like on a smart website (Quo Vadis or Sovereign) then try to book it via Easyjet holidays or "low cost holidays" or "sunshine.co.uk". We "saved" about £800 for the week doing it that way. Still blinking expensive for a family of 4 though! Still getting used to holiday prices (children are 2 and 4 so full price air fares now...).

(By the way, chose Lanzarote over Tenerife as it sounds like it is slightly less high rise and Playa Blanca sounds like it has good beaches - will let you know what it's like when we get back!)

We have been to Lanzarote but in Feb, really liked it some nice places to visit definitely hire a car we got one at the airport for around 100 euros for the week, but then we love Tenerife too and have been twice and booked again for this October.

I think it will be hot in August but there is a nice breeze.

We stayed in Playa Blanca in feb and loved it. It's beautiful. We stayed in a villa and hired a car. So much to see. Would love to go back.

It sounds lovely. Is it advisable to book flights and hotel separately (to make it cheaper) or would it mean you're not covered in the same way as with a package holiday company?

We book separately as better value. There's 5 of us! However, we have chosen annual travel insurance that covers us if one part of the holiday collapses.

I love Lanzarote.

I went to Costa Teguise a couple of times - just me and DS (when he was 5/6). It was okay. Not my favourite now, all a bit too commercialised, but some visitors like that.

Have been to Playa Blanca three times. Twice in a hotel on HB and most recently we hired a villa.

There is a lot to go and see. Car hire is well worth it - as you can get by on buses or tours but the roads are pretty quiet and well tarmaced so easy to get around.

Most recently we have been in February half term, but previously had visited in June. The temps were hot but not ridiculously so. The breeze keeps it bearable. High summer may be a little hotter but from what I hear it is fine.

We booked flights (I booked in August 2011 for travel in Feb 2012 to get the best deal as flights are quite pricy) and accomodation seperately. I used ownersdirect to source our villa. I pre-booked car hire too using Cabrera Medina - collect keys in baggage reclaim area. Easy.

We went years ago. Very nice but rather windy much of the time as I recall.

Beatrixpotty · 15/07/2012 10:46

Been x4 but always in the winter.Prefer Balearics on the summer as flights are shorter but Canaries are the closest for winter sun.Playa Blanca beaches are gorgeous and there are some interesting things to see; Jameos Del Agua grotto,Omar Sharif's villa etc.I would recommend hiring a car as it's an easy island to navigate & the roads are good.
