We are going up to Sheffield unexpectedly next week and would be grateful for suggestions on how to spend the day. It will be myself and ds (2.8 yrs) and I think indoor suggestions as well as outdoor ones would be much appreciated. We'll have the whole day but no transport so places central and easy to get to would be appreciated.

Well Botanical Gardens for outside

Meadowhall for inside (bit of retail therapy), there is a soft play called Alphabet Zoo very near there I have been informed.

Hulababy and Katz will give you some good ideas.

Hi, I live in Sheffield

IN TOWN

Winter Gardens - lovely to sit in there and have a drink and lunch (sandwiches, yummy homemade ckaes) from Zooby's int he corner. Lots of space for DS to wander about. Get there before about 12:30 though as not that many seats!

Next door is the Millenium Galleries - entrance inside the Winter Gardens. At least two galleries are free. Toilets downstairs in here too. Little shop to look round.

If dry, nearby is also the Peace Gardens . The fountains may be on, but probably too cold to sit and play or eat outside here. Nice to wander though.

Obviosuly in town there is all the shops too.

OUT OF TOWN

You could get a tram to Meadowhall shopping centre. Takes about 15 minutes on the tram. All indoors. Has a free Little Tikes play area too for DS.

A longer walk (30 minutes or more) is the Botanical Gardens down Ecclesall Road. Nice to walk round. LOts of open grass for Ds to run about. A lovely tea room/restaurant at the top end. Keep walking down Ecclesall Road and you'd come to another park with a playground.

There are also some soft play centres not too far from the centre, although not on direct bus/tram routes. One not too far form meadowhall - about 10-15 minute walk from tram stop.

That's really helpful. Thanks. I think we will probably stay in town centre to keep things simple, particularly if the weather is as cold as today (I'm not good with the cold!) although Meadowhall does sound promising. How would I get to Winter Gardens or alternatively to Meadowhall from the train station? Do you know how far Alphabet Zoo play centre (Nbg mentioned) is from Meadowhall?

Alphabet Zoo is about a 10 minute walk from the tram/trains top at Meadowhall.

Winter Gardens is opposite where all the threatre's are and right behind the Millenium Galleries.

There is a street map on here . It s a PDF file to download. If you zoom in a bit you can clearly see the station and the Winter Gardens on there.
