Air Travel and Sterilising!

Sorry if I'm being dim here , but I'm having a problem understanding the sterilising thing. We have a 9hr flight to the US with 14 week old dd coming up. I had thought that if I sterilised her bottles at home and took them full of water, I could just add the forumula powder when it came to time for her to eat. But there is lots of chat about disposable sterilised bottles and getting cabin crew to sterilise etc etc. Have I totally missed something? Never done a bottle on the move before and the sterilising stuff is still v new. Can't I just take 4 of my own bottles full from home...? Please help!

Sounds fine to me, as long as you keep them sealed until you need to use them. We used to travel with the sterile Avent teats and as long as we kept the cap and seal tight they were fine, for up to about 24 hours iirc. The only problem you may find is if you use the rubber cap and ring seal on the actual water/botttle the cabin pressure may pop them open so fill, let cool a., loosen the top just a little to let air out and retighten.

get the steri bottles from tescos or boots. I used them along with the premix cartons of formula or take a bottle of evian that you can mix with your own formula - and use the steri bottles.... Premix and steri bottles - then just jettison rubbish as you go - makes life so easy. I used them for a through flight to Australia and back - no problems...

for me - I figured I had enough to carry and worry about without water in bottles etc weighing the bag down. Then pack in your suitcase a few bottles and some milton tablets that you can use to sterilise on cold water whilst away.

I'd go with the disposable bottles and cartons for pre mixed formula.

think you're first idea is right .. that's how DS was fed all the time when on formula .. bottles filled in the morning .. formula added when needed .. fed at room temp

Thank you all! Now I just have to get the rest of the packing sorted...

taking bottles for on the ground is fine but you really don't want to be lugging around full bottles at the airport and whilst on the plane - -trying to mix when you can just bung it in the steri bottle and then dump the carton and the bottle at the end rather than worrying about rinsing out bottles etc.

I also got dd1 used to drinking room temp formula - so she would be fine with that when we were out and about and could not warm formula.
