Considering an offer to be an expat in J'burg. I have small kids and don't want to take silly risks. Good people of SA, how bad is it really? Should we take precautions like gated community / bulletproof car / armed guards?

I have a friend who lived there for a while. A gated community/armed guards are vital, but even with them, life was very stressful with many nasty attacks on neighbours.

She left because she said it's not a place to bring up a child.

Would you be able to visit beforehand or do you know the city at all?

thirdfromleft · 14/05/2012 12:59

I don't really know the city. I can go for a visit but it's a tough to get a real idea of what it's like to live there after a few days, iyswim?

Hello thirdfrom
We do have a living overseas section - let me know if you'd like us to move this thread there for you?
Best of luck
