Sorry to be so quick but the baby has just started crying. Is Amsterdam family friendly? We are going to a dutch center parcs and fancy a city trip on the way home. But is this a mad consideration?

We just did it! Found it v family friendly, just mind you don't get run over by the bikes...

Stayed at the Hotel de Munck which had 2x bedrooms.

V cold so we spent a lot of time on the tourist canal boats just looking at stuff from the water (and v safe for little ones).

Nice people the Dutch Grin

Depending on age of children, they would enjoy visiting Nemo, which is a science museum, its quite hands on from memory. Not far from central station. I would second a trip on the canal boats. I believe there is also a zoo in Amsterdam as well-haven't visited it though.

Artis Zoo is lovely - easily reached by tram. NEMO is great fun for kids.

The museumboot is a canal boat tour that doubles as a bus dropping off at the major museums. Good if you have younger kids who can't sit still for a 1 hour water tour.

If your kids are tiny and need a buggy, I wouldn't recommend it - the city is pretty cobbly and trams, buses and boats are hard to access if you're bogged down with wheels.

This is exactly what we did a few years ago when we stayed on a Dutch CP except we got the train into Amsterdam for the day, to break up the week.

We did a boat trip, ate chips and mayo, wandered round etc. We didn't bother with the museums but the kids were just happy looking around.

I go to Amsterdam quite a bit with work so know it well and all my Dutch colleagues recommend this place which is about 10 miles outside of Amsterdam and fairly accessable. We haven't done it yet but it looks great:
