Wishful thinking, I fear!

Have a good trip anyway.

Which airline are you using?.

On checking in at Orlando one New Years Eve a couple of years back there was a sign posted up at the BA check-in. They were offering 3 Club World seats at a reasonable price. We took advantage of those seats (DS was not given a discount).

Upgrades (where the check-in staff ask you) are nigh on impossible to get these days particularly if the flight is full. If you are lucky enough to get one (which realistically will not happen) you may have to pay the upgrade costs.

Best bet is to become an airline's frequent flier member and get the airmiles that way. BA do one such scheme whereby after a certain number of airmiles you can "cash" these in and use these to pay for an upgrade to the next class up.

When we went to Canada with DS when he was a baby we were bumped up to business class for FREE so we could have a sky cot

It was deffo brill

And we didn't have frequent flyers points either

RTKangaMummy · 08/02/2006 12:34

When we flew to Los Angeles last year we were in Premium econ {business class} and a couple were just asked if they wanted to go up to 1st class

My mum and dad were bumped up from business class to 1st class on their trip to boston a few years ago

IMHO it is how you behave and dress comes into it as well and luck

NotQuiteCockney · 08/02/2006 12:37

I don't think asking makes any difference.

On a BA flight from London to Canada, a few years back, DH, me and our DS were travelling. They bumped DH I think, but not me + DS. At the gate, they worked this out, and bumped me and DS as well. It was just up to Premium Economy, though.

And if you fly BA a lot, and have a Silver card (I think?) you automatically get bumped to Premium Economy if flying Economy.

BudaBabe · 08/02/2006 12:42

Only ever been bumped once. And that is with a lot of flying!

DH was flying long haul recently - can't remember from where - and was flying business class. SO was sitting in the bus class lounge when a fairly noisy family sat next to him and he realised they were on same flight as him. So he used airmiles to upgrade himself to first.

And ..........

they were in first anyway!!!!

Served him right!!!

RTKangaMummy · 08/02/2006 12:44

We DID NOT ask neither did my parents

IIRC if you ask you will not get it

Good luck

I've been bumped loads of times - mainly from economy to business, once from business to first. Always on BA, (DH and I both frequent travellers via work and he had silver card), well dressed (ish - holiday stuff, but conscious effort not to look too grungey round the edges). Dh used to ask politely at check in, and lots of times we were upgraded. I've never been bumped with children - but then seeing as you don't fly from London to Norfolk, not really had chance to try!

We were upgraded to traveller plus from economy with our 4 kids (10, 8, 7 and 6 weeks at the time) on a flight back from JFK to London with BA. Very surprised - the check-in girl was great and we didn't even ask. Dh does travel with them a lot though.

foxinsocks · 08/02/2006 14:26

my parents went back to SA recently and said the flights were absolutely heaving (not one seat free) and they had loads of people on standby.

Hopefully it's calmed down a bit now but if it is still that busy, I wouldn't hold out much hope.

Enjoy your trip!

donnie · 08/02/2006 14:44

we were bumped up from economy to business class on a flight from Athens to Heathrow as they had already allocated seats which didn't allow us to have 3 together. It was fab and we were plied with wine and champagne the whole time! more comfortable too.
That was with BA. We weren't stroppy but we were faily insistent about sitting together.

MaggieW · 10/02/2006 08:00

Always, always ask! I was on a flight to NZ and was upgraded to business class (this was before children) and a family of four were bumped up from economy to first class!! How lovely!!

MABS · 10/02/2006 08:07

look smart but tired. Ask v gently and say you have just come off a night shift. Remember , you are talking to a shift worker so they understand and are usually sympathetic!! And yeah, that comes from experience of working in the airport business!! Good luck.

oxocube · 10/02/2006 19:37

No but my son was recently when travelling as an unaccompanied minor with a friend! They were put in business class with KLM and were very impressed as only ten year olds can be !
