Cruises or trains to/from Stockholm?

I'm planning to go to Stockholm in August, and initially thought it would be nice to do a one day trip or cruise in the Baltic Sea. My brother went in one that was 1 day long a couple of years ago, but I can't find anything like that on the internet.

I thought of flying to Copenhagen and then taking the train to Stockholm, but then read it's a 5 hour trip, which may be a bit too much for 2yo DS (and we may also have another couple with a 3yo with us).

So, I'm stuck. I'd like to go for a scenic trip, instead of staying only in Stockholm, but don't know what to do. My initial idea was to go an see the fjords, but then found out they are at the other side of the land and I would need a week long cruise to get there! (you can see I didn't pay much attention to my Geography classes...)

Any suggestions/help?

Thanks!

They did a variety of day cruises round the harbour/city etc that my then 2 year old loved. There is also a fantastic park/zoo (can't remember name) near city centre that will be perfect.

Thanks Gigondas, I think the day cruises will be a better option. There are several ones that sound lovely! Do you suggest any one in special?

The park you mean is the Skansen? Is it really good or a bit too "touristy"? When I was in Amsterdam I went to the Keukenhof (the one with the tulips) and wasn't very impressed (it's nice, but not worth the whole day, I think), so I'm a bit wary it will be similar.

There is a naff old school fair ground bit. Park itself with zoo etc in is popular but still nice (wouldn't say particularly touristy).

No particular recommendations but you prob want one that stops at the swimming beaches.

We thought it was a lovely place to visit ESP with kids.

Skansen is well worth a visit. No place in Stockholm is too 'touristy'. And it's not just a zoo or an amusement park. They've got museums and gardens too. You'll love it. Maybe go to Hotel Hasselback located nearby too. Very nice. I'm not swedish or working for their tourist board by the way.

Gigondas and stormgirl, thanks for the reassurance, I'll definitely include the Skansen in our visit then.

I'm getting really excited about this trip, I'm sure DS will enjoy it :) Thanks for the help!
