Evening in London with children?

Has anyone got any ideas of something we can do in the evening with our 6 year old boy? Would love to take him to the theatre but sadly it seems out of our price range.

How about Covent Garden, they often have street performers but I'm not sure what time that will go on till. South Bank & millennium wheel though i haven't done that so not really sure!

If your heart is set on the theatre and you're willing to get to London earlier that day, there are ticket booths at Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Sq that do same day theatre tickets for about 50% off the regular price.
You could go to London early in the day, get the tickets and go to a museum to waste time until show time?
