Where shall we go on holiday this August?

Please help us choose!

We're a family of five, dc aged 5, 9, 11.

We want to spend a week at our destination, with up to 24h door-to-door travelling at either end.

UK or abroad.

Not more than 2-3?h time-difference, as (a) don't want to be bothered with jetlag, and (b) longhaul would be too expensive.

Needs to be fairly temperate weather - I have skin problems which mean that I cannot cope with strong sunshine, sweat, or too much heat in general.

Not camping.

And the really tricky requirement is that dh likes landscapes, hiking and generally physical activity, whereas I like museums, history, culture and food. But we are both willing to compromise a bit.

How about Austria? we wnet with Thomson last August and had a fab time. It was a super mix of culture and activities.

Where in the UK are you?

Edinburgh is lovely and not too far from the Highlands for walking etc. but is the Festival on in August?

Copenhagen/Jutland? Or Sweden (Stockholm/Malmo) - easy to get out to the countryside. Or how about Reykjavik?

I suggested Scotland, we enjoyed pre-dc, but dh had only one word to say: "midges".

Definitely like the idea of Iceland.

Austria sounds nice, too.

We're in the SE, so can get to pretty much everywhere fairly easily.

No midges on the Edinburgh side of Scotland! The area around Edinburgh/Perth/Saint Andrews etc is lovely.

Prague? No idea what the temperature would be like in the summer but I doubt it would be too hot.

Iceland would be v expensive, I think. How much do you want to spend?

Austria sounds good - would love to know more about that if you return to the thread please Doglover.
