Hotels in/near Cambridge?

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 27/12/2005 20:01

MN came up trumps when I requested a hotel in the Milton Keynes area last year so I thought I should ask you all again.
I should know of something myself (grew up there) but I only know the University Arms Hotel (where dh and I stayed after our wedding). This time we're going for my brother's wedding.
Any recommendations gratefully received!

I don't live that far from Cambridge and have just started work there. I don't know about hotels, but I can ask at work. Did you want it central?

The other thing you have to watch out for is if there's a conference on, all the hotels get booked up pretty quickly!

Depending on the day, you may be able to get a Supersaver (i.e. 10 quid a night) deal with one of the Travelodges in Cambridge. Well worth a look.

thanks for your responses. I want to book now as although the wedding isn't till August I know how booked up they can get!
Ideally I want to avoid travellodge - haven't had the best experiences there and want to make this a special weekend away.

There's one near the Lion Yard car park - very central - I stayed there once. Will try and remember the name!

I've always found Travelodge to be fine, but obviously not what you want for a special weekend away. (Unless your idea of special is having 'breakfast in a bag' delivered to the room )

Do you want to be near to where your bro is getting married?

The hotel Felix had a good review for food in the local rag:

www.hotelfelix.co.uk/

Its about 2 miles from the centre, and is easily reached from the A14

I know the one you mean CQ - it might be a Holiday Inn at the moment (it has changed hands a few times). Ironically that is where my future sister in law used to work.
They are getting married at one of the colleges (but I can't remember which (possibly Magdelene, near the river). I don't mind staying out of town though as dh is happy to drive if it's a really nice hotel.
will look at Felix.

that Felix hotel looks fantastic. Unfortunately I think it's too nice for all of us as a family - that would have to be dh and I only I think.
really, really gorgeous...

Garden House Hotel might be okay
Not sure if the Holiday Inn is still there - they are bulldozing some of the town centre
Have heard v good things about the food at Hotel Felix

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 30/12/2005 17:26

is the Garden House the one that overlooks the Mill pond? (sigh, happy teenage memories).
I had forgotton about that one.

Re: the Felix, well you DID say nice

There's a Holiday Inn, or something similar at Histon, which is right on the Cambridge border

Caribbeanqueen · 30/12/2005 17:53

It's a Crowne Plaza, on Downing St.

twirlingaroundthechristmastree · 30/12/2005 18:00

where is the wedding reception?

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 30/12/2005 18:03

cq - that's the one!
I think the reception is at the college.

Which college - and do you want a hotel in walking distance?

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 30/12/2005 18:09

I think it might be Magdelene but I'm not 100% sure. I'll check before I book! I don't mind it not being walking distance though (could take a cab if need be).

The Arundel is close to Magdalene College...it overlooks the river.
Not sure what it's like to stay there - probably a little cheaper than the Plaza/ Garden Hse / University Arms I would think. What's your budget?
