Northumberland? My favourite place is Bamburgh, but anywhere along that coast is lovely.

isn't there a castle there? I also heard about whitby and it's famous fish and chips. know anything about that?

Check out a small town called Seahouses. It's close to the Slate Hall Riding Centre too - so you may be able to go riding along the beach.

Whitby has a sandy beach, small harbour, abbey ruin (dracula). It's a small town/resort but packed with character. Famous fish n chips & kippers! Also easy access to Scarborough & north york. moors. There would be plenty of riding choices nearby.

The beach at Bamburgh is one of my favourites, Holy Island is nearby & so is Alnwick Castle. This would be a beach, dunes & sarnies type holiday.

we'll only have about 3 days before heading up to Scotland. Will this be enough?

If you are heading up to Scotland from 'down south', Bamburgh is not far off the coast road that eventually ends up in Edinburgh. If your kids are young, happy with bucket, spade & paddling then that would be my choice with only 3 days. Each to their own though Smile

Wanted to add my enthusiasm for Whitby, great for kids & lots of character

curtaincall · 20/05/2011 18:36

I seem to have fixated on Whitby as I heard it has a famous fish and chip shop. Does anyone know where it is? Apparently it has queues going round the block when they're frying!

Its The Magpie, its very popular, we never waited in queue for table in restaurant but did get takeaway fish & chips, v yummy. There are lots of good restaurants in Whitby, nice cafes too , Moon & Sixpence is a lovely bar/bistro. Whitby is ace Grin

curtaincall · 21/05/2011 11:11

Thanks Imelda I'm going to base our trip around The Magpie. That and a visit to my great-grandfather's grave in Newcastle.

IMO some of the best beaches in England are in Northumberland - Druridge Bay, Alnmouth, Bamburgh, Beadnell, Seahouses, Embleton to name a few. There is so much to see and do in Northumberland so there will always be something of interest in case the weather is bad.
