You can definitely take food in, I always take sandwiches, crisps etc but there are no picnic areas inside the parks so you will just need to look out for a spare bench to sit on. You do have your bag searched on the way in but it is just a security check. The castle was open last time I was there in January but they are doing some maintenance work on the outside so doesn't look quite a impressive as usual.

Hi Plum.
The Castle is currently being refurbished, due to be finished for the summer. They have recently covered the scaffolding with a board painted like the Castle, so they have tried to make it look better for visitors.
See this link for photos.

They do allow some drinks and snacks into the parks, but not full picnic bags , cool boxes or hampers. There are no lockers for hire in the parks, but you can pay to leave bags at Left Luggage desks in both parks, at the entrance near Guest / Studio Services.

The only official picnic area is outside the parks, on the way to the car parks.
Bags are searched at security before you get to the parks entrances. They have xray machines like you find at airports.

Regarding tips - too many to mention here really. If you are going in the Easter holidays when parks are very busy, I would certainly recommend making advance dining reservations unless you are only eating fast food while you are there.
