Am off to Barcelona end of March, have been before and would like to visit a few less touristy places, any ideas. Want to try find some little tapas bars too, any suggestions gratefully received, TIA

Cerveceria Catalana is great. There is another cool tapas bar which is much more "local" and old fashioned that DH and I are trying to remember the name of. Also a couple of cool bars.... will get back to you!

Mermaid I can't recommend anywhere in Barcelona but Sitges, which is a 40 min train ride from Barcelona is a fabulous place with lots of traditional restaurants and no brits abroad

You really have to go to Gaudi's work in progress, the Sagrada Família! Barcelona's probably my favourite short break city destination, sights, food, beach lovely!

Alibobster I agree but OP should also be aware how very popular Sitjes is with gay men (just in case she has any problem with that), I had a great weekend there with a bunch of mates that included two gay guys and the beach is lovely, but it's not a resort for everyone, unless it has changed a lot since I was there.

I think there is more than enough to keep anyone very happy in Barcelona, especially for first visit, without catching trains anywhere. It really is a fantastic city and tbh you should have a great time just walking and stopping as and when you feel like it, for cava and tapas and cava and tapas and....you get the pictureGrin. Am v Envy OP! It never gets boring!

Oh-if you like food, you must visit the food market next to Las Ramblas, it is amazing, puts even Borough market in the shade!

One of the best trips I did when based in Barcelona was out to Monserrat mountain using the rack railway. The views were amazing. You catch the train from Sants station and pay for a through ticket which includes the rack railway section.
