In car DVD players and rear-facing car seats?

I don't know if DVD players in cars are a big MN no-no, and I'll get flamed for suggesting I'm thinking of getting one... But we have a six-hour car journey coming up and my 2 year old is going to struggle (as am I!) for entertainment for that long as he won't sleep for long.

However, I've not seen one in RL and looking on-line they appear to plug into the cigarette lighter and so I'm assuming they have a cable - does this mean it won't stretch to the back head rest (as we have a rear-facing car seat)?

Also would be grateful for any recommendations.

Thanks!

We fitted one last summer as we were driving to France for our holidays. DS is in besafe Izi rear facing seat. My husband bought a kit and run an extension from the cigarette lighter to the boot so we could plug it in there (I think he got it in maplin ). We bought a tablet style DVD player from halfords (about £100) and it came with the hanging kit and it fits perfectly on the headrest facing him.

It was well worth it, a great distraction for DS and I found it's useful for stopping them sleeping too much on long journeys.

We have a people carrier and a two-screen DVD - the cable actually reaches as far as the rear headrest, so the person in the third row can view if required. But you can also buy extension leads, as Aonach says.

Stuff the flamers - with three dcs and a two-day drive to the south of France they are pretty essential for peace and harmony!

Could you get a proper portable one that isn't fixed to the headrests? Our DD has had one since she was about 2.6 and it's been a life saver.
She is currently on her second one, she decided to prod the laser on the first and it died.
