Hi all

We are taking our first family trip abroad, to Maderia, at the end of Feb with our 8 month old son.

I am getting a bit knicker twisty about how I am going to clean his bottles/food bowels (they currently just go in the dishwasher). A friend tells me you can buy sterilising bags from Mothercare and just add tablets, but is it ok to use the tap water?

Any advice very much appreciated!

Tap water is fine for sterilising with the tablets. Take a travel kettle if you prefer to boil it.

You can use tap water and cold water sterilising tablets like Milton. Take a big plastic bos that everything will fit in.

Nefret · 10/02/2011 12:19

Sorry that should have said plastic box Wink

At 8 months and healthy a bit of soap and hot water will suffice. I'm sure a kettle in the room will be fine. I took my 7m old to tenerife and never sterilised anything by this age they should be fine.

Sure that Maderia has very high standards.

Are you in a hotel or self-catering appartment?

We used microwave sterilising bags - bought them in John Lewis. You just bung everything into the bag, add water and put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes.

Oh, and don't assume that there will be a kettle in the room - it is not always standard in Europe unless they have lots of Brits.

I did the plastic box and sterilising tablets thing. I used Evian water for making up bottles though.

Emmadufo · 12/02/2011 09:37

we are in a hotel so have taken the precaution of emailing them to secure a kettle!

we took a travel kettle from argos and boiled the bottle in it to sterilise, and boiled bottled water to make the bottles up (ours was 9mths and we were in thailand for 6 weeks). Have a lovely holiday :)

Thanks for all your help!
