car hire in italy?

hi, we've just returned from france having hired a car from super U (ie a supermarket) - you book it in advance and then pick it up from your local branch.

I was wondering if such a thing exists in italy. my PIL have an apartment near villafranca/aulla and i was wondering if their local supermarket might do the same thing - otherwise as far as i can make out there is nowhere that nearby that will rent us a car (we go by train, so would rather not hire a car in a big city and then have to navigate out of said big city on the wrong side of the road).

the ideal hire place/supermarket would be conad in aulla. have you ever heard of such a thing?!?

TIA

pisa i think, but we don't come via pisa...

it was just a thought, i just saw it in the pages jaunes when i was in france. perhaps i should ask the local pagina gialla (excuse phoney italian).

thanks for your response though.

x.

Hi,

I'm not sure about this but would be interested to know how you get on. We took our own car to Italy this year but 2 years ago we hired a car there. A little warning - we were sent a bill one year after returning for driving in a restricted area in Pisa, we didn't see the sign.

I am writing a blog with travel tips for parents. Please check it out and add questions or comments. www.lovebabylovetravel.com

All the best,

did you hire your car from an airport? also in france, i'm sure i've come across car dealers also hiring cars (or shipping them in specially for the dates you've booked). to me this is the perfect answer for places in the sticks (where lots of places are in france and italy) that don't have car hire.

this will bump the thread, perhaps someone will come along with an answer for me...

ironically i'd happily travel by train when i'm there, but the nearest station is 3 miles away, and the car that my pils have has only 4 seats, and there are 4 of us, so we cannot be given a lift to the station (or rather we can, but it takes two journeys), but we tie their car up all day when not even using it to park it at the station ourselves. and there are not that many trains...
