Privately-owned apartments in Majorca?

Am thinking of going abroad for the first time next year, school holidays. Self-catering, probably Majorca. But every package hol self-catering place I see fills me with dread. Tiny apartment with mostly only 1 bedroom between 4, "kitchen" is laughable with only 2 rings and no space to do any real cooking, no space to swing a cat around the pool with not enough sunloungers etc etc.

I was wondering if it might keep us more sane to hire a privately-owned apartment with a shared pool for a week, say on Owners Direct. The only thing bothering me is would the kids (will be 5 & 7) miss out on kids' entertainment stuff/making friends etc? Can you use the entertainment at other hotels at night or is that now allowed?

Also owners direct and holiday lettings def worth a look.
Maybe you need to try and find more of an apartment complex though if you want shared facilities so that your children will still have the chance to interact with other children.
