Ancestry AIBU

I use Ancestry a lot, and find it useful BUT it's so annoying when people put up family trees on there with no evidence for some of the links between individuals, apart from wishful thinking. And don't reply when you contact them and ask for more information.
And then others just take that (wrong) information without checking on it.
It's a shame, because it's otherwise so useful.

Agreed!

I put my family tree on there for my own research and records purposes, rather than for other people’s research. I rarely log on, so I have missed people’s messages about links. So the problem is more that people use the site in different ways and regularity.

That's fine, I can see why you do that. But it's easy to make it private in those circumstances.
I know it sounds niggly of me but this has happened twice now. I've been digging away and trying to find a link, and come across someone who has. It's great, and exciting, for a nerd like me. So it's very frustrating when wonky stuff goes up there with no explanation - just a hunch.

Annoying when they put info on that you know is wrong. Some random had put my mum on their tree and argued when I told them the dates they had put were wrong. I know when my own mum died ffs...

I've seen 2 family trees one where a 42 year old woman is married to a 19 year old man, another where a woman appears to have had a child way past child bearing age.
Do these people not see the discrepancies?

Annoys the hell out of me. There are lots of people who just collect names, and it's amazing how many of these trees have royalty in them!

I research a family where lots of people have the same names and so many trees just mix them all up.

I have a basic tree on Ancestry and it has brought me a few interesting contacts, but I keep all my research on a family history PC program and share it with genuine people who ask nicely.

I keep my tree private as it don't want it misused.

Even my own estranged uncle's public tree has so many errors in our family tree. It annoys me but at the same time, I laugh because he is just name collecting (the wrong names quite a few times!!)
