Power and Democracy in the UK - 1490 to 1918

DD has been told she is studying this in history next year. She is doing very well at history and her teacher suggested she read up on this or visit places of interest. Any ideas? Not entirely sure what happened in this period regarding democracy and have no idea where to visit! We are based in Surrey if it helps (still zone 6 of London Transport though).

Wow that is a massive time period - are you sure it's correct? If so, it could only be studied at a very superficial level even "thematically". Do you have any more detail on the course that would help us point you in the right direction?

I think it might be worth trying to find a timeline for the period and then pick out key events. 1490 is the period just after the wars of the roses when the Tudors came to power - Henry Viii and all that. Then of course you move into the civil war and the Cromwell protectorate in the 17th century which were fundamental to the establishment of our democracy and constitutional monarchy. Then the 18th century enlightenment and the growth of parliamentary democracy then Empire etc. WWI, votes for women.

Could your DD's teacher recommend some books to give DD an overview?

Could you visit the Houses of Parliament/Westminster Hall/Hampton Court/Imperial War Museum/Churchill War Rooms - all relevant to events she may study and quite a fun way to spend some days out.

That's what I thought mateysmum! Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to talk to the teacher before the kids broke up yesterday. Thanks for your ideas though - didn't realise they did tours of the Houses of Parliament for kids so will book that one :)
