I'm crap. I've never struggled so much with an OU course. Basically my essay is about whether Britain had more in common with France or Germany on the eve of the First World War.

I have found some sources and I have a few points I think I can compare (type of rule, population, industry v agriculture, politics) but I know I'm missing something obvious and can't think what it is.

This is what I get for doing another course with a 4 year old, 3 year old and 10 week old!

Relative size and importance of military. Colonial possessions. Age of nation (Germany is a pretty recent creation). Balance between land and sea power in each nation's military. Inbreeding-related genetic diseases of ruling class. Balance between professional and conscript forces. Principal policy goals, as stated and as disclosed by actions. That do to be going on with?

Monarchy v's republic. British and German monarchy very intertwined. Gemany and Britain, IMHO, were ther more alike nations and from an outside position although there was rivalry in industry, shipping, etc were not likely adversaries.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I love this era but much more for the social aspects rather than warfare

Monarchy? We virtually shared a monarchy. France being a republic hadn't had that for a long time - vive la revolution an all that?

Ooops already said - I really should RTFT! :)

I trying up recall, but no I don't think so. In Russia at the time the prevailing view was that Germsny would be the first country to be one Socialist in a Marxist sense.

I am going a history degree at the moment. This era is also my thing, but as you say from a social perspective.
