Joanna Lumley on The Ark, David Suchet on St Paul ...

All very glam and don't they have beautiful speaking voices. But does it add anything? Can't actual historians popularise history just as well?

Maybe the TV executives think that us common folk don't appreciate documentaries unless there's a celebrity face to pull us in?
