It's a totally legitimate academic work, as far as I am concerned. A very eminent medievalist put it on a reading list for me once. He said, detective plot aside, it was as good as a lot of factual books on the culture of medieval monasteries, and a lot more fun. Hmm, perhaps he meant the book though...

And Eco was originally a medievalist I think? As well as being, basically awesome.
