It's a totally legitimate academic work, as far as I am concerned. A very eminent medievalist put it on a reading list for me once. He said, detective plot aside, it was as good as a lot of factual books on the culture of medieval monasteries, and a lot more fun. Hmm, perhaps he meant the book though...

Really?! Ooh, I should definitely put in on reading lists then. I love that book.
