DH went to Swansea, we both live here still.
What will you be studying? The city itself is lovely, but then I would say that, lots for students though, big student 'community' nice beach, pretty good shops now the city is being 'done up'

DH studied something dull but never finished his degree as was offered a job, so probably not the best person to ask!
There are a few ex Swansea Mner's around though god knows where they are right now

brimfull · 24/01/2010 19:44

dd has had offer for french and economics

Don't know anyone who studied either of those, sorry!
One thing for Swansea, a lot of my friends aren't from here but stayed here after university, which always seems like a positive!
It does rain. A lot. That always surprises people
The locals are lovely, as long as you aren't a rowdy student, and there is a student village just out of the city with it's own bus route, as well as 2 or 3 student areas in the city itself.
And if she is at all a fan of the great outdoors, the Gower was the first UK site awarded status of 'Area of Outstanding natural Beauty'

brimfull · 24/01/2010 20:48

Thanks . Seems to be popular with students.
Wondered about the reputation with employers.

complete hearsay this. but i have heard that you need to complete a welsh language course either before, or whilst you are there. but it may be chinese whispers gossip type that i heard.

mummyofexcitedprincesses · 24/01/2010 23:24

The Welsh laguage course is a myth. Swansea attracts students from all over the UK and the world. It is a good university and a lovely, ugly town (Dylan Thomas) or pretty, shitty city (Rhys Ifans, Twin Town).

Joking aside, I love Swansea, lived there for a few years and would consider moving back if it wasn't for DH's job. The uni has a good reputation and is well established.

borriebear · 24/01/2010 23:27

Another ex swansea student here with two big thumbs up. I found the locals friendly and the location excellent. The beaches are excellent and the city was a good size. There was loads going on at the Uni with some very good societies. My housemate did economics and now has a good job with a top accounting firm.

I would also recommend the student village as a good first step to living on your own. Luckily there was no mention of learning welsh when I was there (not sure how well I would have done!) but that might have changed.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 24/01/2010 23:35

I went to Swansea and loved it. Made the best friends of my life and still see them regularly. The EBMS (european business management school) seems to churn out a lot of accountants - I know a few people who studied there and now have very good jobs. I on the other hand did a degree in psychology and sociology. I now make cakes for a living. LOL!

Swansea itself is fabulous, lovely countryside nearby, and we always found plenty to do. Lots of accommodation available too, i lived in the student village for 2 years, its was fine. Didnt have to learn welsh when i was there either! I dont know a single person who went to swansea and didnt like it.

brimfull · 24/01/2010 23:44

Thnak you everyone , good to know it has a good rep.
and phew about the welsh

Swansea is great. I lived there for years and studied at the university for a year. I've studied at a few universities and found it no better or no worse than the others, although my experience was in 1996 so a bit out of date!

There are areas of the city your DD should avoid although nowhere in the city is particularly bad in comparison with other cities.

Swansea nightlife is very contained and centred around one or two streets so is pretty fun; there is nothing quite like Wind Street!

The beaches are amazing, and if she is lucky she may even get a view of the sea every day. I really miss that.

If she likes shopping then Swansea won't excite her although her money will go further than in other places!

If you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer them. I get back to Swansea every few months or so.

EssenceOfJack · 25/01/2010 14:45

Ahem llareggub, we have new shops now donchaknow, the new arcadey thing is open and has...um...country casuals and Viyella...

and we have had a flashmob!

brimfull · 25/01/2010 16:58

viyella and country casuals!
lol

There's Zara! That pleased me....

EssenceOfJack · 25/01/2010 19:35

Zara? Really!

llareggub · 25/01/2010 20:00

Yes, Zara. It is situated where the David Evans cosmetic counters used to be, opposite the old Richards shop. See, I am a proper Jack!

EssenceOfJack · 25/01/2010 20:14

I haven't been into town in ages since they closed the bus station, I can't work out where my bus goes home from and am worried about getting stuck with DD's!
Might wander in next time I have money.
seriously though they are doing better shops wise

llareggub · 25/01/2010 20:28

I popped into town over christmas but only went as far as Zara and Monsoon before heading over to soft play at the LC. I didn't venture into the Quadrant at all.

I couldn't face driving around Swansea. What on earth have they done to the centre? It is all bendy buses and oddness. Bring back the city mini!

EssenceOfJack · 25/01/2010 21:53

I know, it's all gone very weird, can't get anywhere you want to, and if you go too far it takes 6 million hours to get back round again!
And those stupid buses don't go anywhere near me, so that pisses me off too!
