Am writing a reference list and I have a book which I have cited which is a 2nd edition.

I thought I had to list the date as the original publishing date (1994) and note that it is the 2nd edition but one of the secondary references from it is a study from 2005 so if I use the 1994 publishing date that wont make sense.

So which date for the book do I use 1994 or 2006 which is the 2nd edition date?

2nd edition date, and say that it is the 2nd edition.
Normally you would use the first edition but if it's important that it's a later one, you can use that one and specify which one it is.

I think!

Agree with kathy - it's a second, updated edition rather than a reprint/reissue of the same volume, so it's important that you cite it as the second edition.

Ok that makes more sense than the advice my DH gave me!

Thanks so much. Can hand it in now!
