There are degrees in Event Management now - or at least certainly qualifications. Manchester Metropolitan University definitely has one. Though might be better to get broader qualification and then good work experience? Perhaps an EM will drop by shortly and can give you better advice...

also there are postgrad courses if you already have a first degree

this seems to say that experience counts for more than study (as in a lot of things!) so maybe you would be better off getting a junior position or work placement at a company

after I posted that question I thought about it and yes...lo and behold there are lots of degrees in Event Management. Thought my question must have been the most duhhhhh on mumsnet this week. Crept back here to see if you were all laughing hysterically at me

yep, countess, experience often counts for more than study in starting a career. Not for me but for DD(17 next year)
