What’s it like? My niece has been allocated to the College following application. It was one she didn’t visit on open day. We also didn’t get round to seeing on open day.

It's on the river, near Magdalen Bridge. I have fond memories of a friend of mine mixing cocktails in the laundry room then taking them down to the river bank on a sunny day and watching the punts drift past.

They had a massive renovation project a few years ago, so I think they have nice student accommodation on site. DS visited it and they were very friendly.

The usual line is that whichever college you go to becomes the best college ever. No news is good news ie. no horror stories

nice site. Good accom. Students refer to themselves as Hildebeasts. Under applied for as looks like a nice girl’s school they than being honeyed stone, hence picking up applicants this way.

Very pretty and on the river.
It was the last all girls' college and I think it changed around 5 or 6 years ago to mixed, so should be fully 50/50 now.
It's out of town a little - the all girls ones tended to be because they were founded later, but probably the closest of those to town. It's on the Iffley Road roundabout and many of the colleges have houses or accommodation down that way, plus the uni sports facilities are down there.
She may want to have a bike, especially if she's doing maths/science which is to the North of the city.

My son is at St Hilda’s. It was his first choice of college and he has loved it there. As the above poster said, it is not your typical ‘stone quad’ type of Oxford College, and that, combined with the fact that it is on the other side of Magdalen Bridge means it gets fewer visitors on open days. But it is in an absolutely beautiful and peaceful location right on the banks of the river and is a lovely place to live and study. Teaching and pastoral
support have been fantastic. Good luck to your niece with her application!

It went mixed in 2008 so 18 years ago. Therefore it is very much a mixed college although remains proud of its feminist legacy.

I don't think of it as out of town. It's just the other side of the bridge - 5 mins walk from Magdalen, High Street, Schools. Quite near the Merton Street entrance to Christchurch Meadow, botanical gardens etc. St Hughes is out of town.

Out of town is all very relative, it's as far out as St Hugh's but in another direction. It has lovely grounds and I'm sure it's great.

Lovely location on the river and although it’s “out of town” (ie 5 minutes over Magdalen bridge) it is much closer to where all the bars and restaurants are on Cowley Road.

Also good food.
