Motorsport Engineering at Uni

hi. my DS (19) has decided he'd like to explore motorsport engineering at Uni for next year. he's currently in yr 13 having restarted his A-Levels repeating yr 12. His A-Levels are health care orientated as this was his original plan. he's now having a re-think. anyone with any experience of this at uni, or thoughts on job prospects?? he'd have to do a foundation year to catch up on physics and maths. he did start maths A-Level but dropped it in the repeat year. any information on motorsport engineering would be appreciated!!

This might be better moved to the Higher Ed board @EllaPepper

It's quite a niche degree by the looks of it – offered at unis inc Derby, UCLan and Oxford Brookes. They want maths or science A level (does he have a science?) and some offer a foundation year but you might need to dig deeper to see what is needed for that.

What's caused him to pivot? how did he do at maths and physics GCSE? I think a degree that has an expectation of those subjects at A level would be a challenge, even with a foundation year, unless you had good innate ability and liking for those subjects (so high grades at GCSE and them being subjects you enjoy) – which he may be of course. Why did he drop the A level maths?

My son is in his 2nd year at ulan studying motorsport engineering-I highly recommend it. The course is fab and the facilities are amazing.

my sons a levels were applied science, sport science and engineering. He excelled and got in.

i hope your lad decides to follow his dreams.

My DP studied this at UCLAN (graduated 11 years ago) and has had a really successful career from it with a lot of job opportunities

This is another great degree for motorsport engineering.

Family member works in this field - is a maths genius, although a late starter who took a while to hit their stride. But thinks in maths and physics ie. sees the world via maths.

Also was very involved with building engines and tinkering with family cars (sometimes v annoyingly).

If your DS isn't good at or keen on maths and physics, it may not be the field for him, from what I know of it.

Im pretty sure one of my sons flatmate is doing this type of course at Loughborough Uni and loving it. Good luck to him!
