He’s very very shy and is happy in his own company. But he’s going days without even going outside!! He is working on a group project and seems to think sitting in his room and doing his own thing will be fine. I’m so worried and getting cross that he’s not making the absolute most of the opportunities in front of him.

How on earth can I get him out? I can’t exactly ring his lecturers or tutors!! It’s uni FFS, not to primary school.

Group projects are tough because they are supposed to be challenging people to get out of their comfort zones.
Leave him alone and let him find his own way unless he asks for help unless you never want him to grow up.

Do you think he's unhappy? You say on his own - do you mean zero contact with anyone at all? Or hes engaged with course and meeting people there and potentially playing online games and talking with people online in room? What opportunities do you think he's missing out on?

I think you need to seperate out what you want for him (or what you would want for yourself if you had the opportunity to be 18 and go to uni!) And what he wants and is best for him.

Aw OP, I totally know how he feels as i was like that when I first started at uni many years ago. It will be ok, but if you feel comfortable posting which uni there may be kids of Mumsnetters who are at the same uni and will befriend your son.
