Wednesday Sports Socials

What’s the craic with the Wednesday sports socials? Some of them sound bloody awful. Some demand the freshers look as hideous as possible, full face/body paint, fancy dress and then various challenges that involve rubbing fish products on their body and threats of eyebrows being shaved off. Regardless of the fact that it’s borderline bullying, surely many can’t afford to buy a new fancy dress outfit and different coloured face paint every week. It’s literally putting some of them off continuing with the sport. Does this go on for the entire year?

😳 Which uni is this? Is this in the Uk?

Fancy dress socials have long been part of University social life, but mostly people use their imagination and adapt things. People aren't paying out for costumes all the time.

No idea what you are talking about with the fish.

People are allowed to say 'no' you know ?

Why would a student even be telling their Mum this level of information ?

We love hearing about the dress up theme every week! It doesn't cost as much as tbe drinking!!

They should be able to decline if they wish and there should be a welfare officer to talk to if the feel bullied. The club officers receive training from the students union.

There are massive drinking issues in sports clubs at UK universities and there have been clubs that have banned initiations and clubs who have received warnings about hazing.

It is a huge part of the university club culture but there should be a way of saying no, if they feel uncomfortable and also it should be possible to participate in their sport without being involved in all of the drinking based activities but I can see why some students might feel like leaving this environment and finding other ways to spend their time. If they want to continue playing sport without being involved in the socials, they should speak to their captain or sport welfare officer to see how they can continue within their comfort zone..

Why are you bothered? Let your DC get on with learning to be independent.
