May I humble brag here?

A while ago I started a thread asking for help for DS doing a Masters at Cambridge in a tough subject. He was really struggling with the workload and on the point of breakdown. Many posters were very kind and helpful.

Well, it got harder. DS said many times that he regretted going to Cambridge and almost did not do his exams, he was so stressed and broken. But we coaxed him to at least give them a try. He got a grip, went in and did them, and got first class honours and a distinction, ending up 2nd out of 61 students. This after assuring us he was going to fail!

He's thrilled to bits, and just started his first- very good- job in his field of interest. I do not mention my DC on any social media and DS also does not allow me to brag to my friends- he thinks it's "gauche"- so may I please brag here? And also thank you all for your help. Someone said back in Dec that all Cambridge students think they are going to fail- but they all pass- and this turned out to be right!

It's been a long and gruelling journey for him, starting from online A levels in the pandemic. I am so proud I could burst.

Oh my goodness-you brag away!!!
What an amazing achievement.
You have every right to feel mightily proud and also frustrated that DS won't let you sing it from the rooftops.

As a mum of three, that feeling that you could burst due to something they've achieved is unlike any other feeling. Makes all the hard times worth it.

UsernameHoarder · 03/10/2026 09:12

Love a good news story! Well done to him. I can only imagine how proud you are. And let's not underestimate how tough it must have been for you. Coaching young adults through difficult times is draining.

My only gripe? You posted to early for me to say 'fizz all round then?'

OneZanyCat · 03/10/2026 09:14

Lovely post - so encouraging to those of us with kids starting/struggling at uni. Not so much a brag as a good news story and a message to stay calm and remain positive. We need more of those on here.

2chocolateoranges · 03/10/2026 09:28

Brag away!

You can run round in your pants squealing too (Although not in front of him)

RampantIvy · 03/10/2026 13:09

Well done to your DS. It all seems so worthwhile when it takes so much effort to achieve.

fortyfifty · 03/10/2026 13:14

Well done to your son. 👏 I like hearing positive news about young people. I give my friends every opportunity to tell me about their DC's wins. I think we should celebrate young people more, especially when they work hard to achieve something.

thegrind · 04/10/2026 10:00

congratulations! An epic result.

TomeletteswithGreggs · 04/10/2026 10:31

Thank you, everyone.
In a way it was good for DS to face real adversity and learn resilience. But god so stressful!
