It’s behind a paywall but would be interesting to see.

I would like it to be true that blind recruitment leads to more diversity, but in the civil service dept my brother works in, all their current Fast Stream graduates are from Oxford and the Leadership team is all Oxford, bar one (Cambridge).

Much as the assessments and interview processes are blind, the scrutiny of the tutorial/supervision system and having to defend and interrogate your own thoughts does create students who perform very well at interview.

You appear to be suggesting that no student from any other university had the right skills. That’s statistically impossible.

@fairyring25 I think Loughborough has been a top 10/11 for quite a number of years. I have a friend whose son got an insurance offer there (had applied to Warwick for firm, I think). She is very impressed. Long terms, lots of contact hours and a significant amount of end-of-year in person exams (more than at the son's friends' RR unis). She has 2 other kids at leading RR and felt Loughborough compared very favourably.

I was a bit surprised to hear this initially as thought mainly sports but then it hit me that many people who are elite sports people often are highly driven. Yes, maybe their entry grades are somewhat lower than others in the top 10 but then presumably off set by the fact those pursuing elite sports training train so much. If they hadn't, maybe they would have hit their ceiling of ability.

But she also said lots of people don't do any sports - another surprise as I assumed everyone going was massively into sports. Which is why my DC didn't apply to Loughborough. Shame as would have been a convenient choice location wise for us.

Yeh lots of people when they hear DS is (or was) at Lboro assume he did sports science. Nope he took an MSc in biological studies. And the grades required for it were exactly the same as similar courses at RG unis Leeds, Nottingham, Sheffield.

A colleague once said to me “oh it's just a sports college really isn’t it?” Shock Well no. It's a great uni tho admittedly if you want the busy city life it may not be a good choice. But there is so much focus on the uni and the many activities offered (yes sport but lots of other things too) that it makes for a great student experience.

Oxford is massively selective, other universities basically take anyone who comes with minimal qualifucations. Why then should it be surprising that employment candidates from Oxford are better?

No, and I cannot see how you could infer that from my comment.

What I'm saying is that the supervision/tutorial style of education that is offered at Oxford and Cambridge is different to that offered elsewhere.

It builds skills that students elsewhere would have to engage in extra-curriculars like debating and public speaking to achieve.

I'm not saying that all these Fast Stream students should come from Oxford, but rather that it is not surprising that they do come from Oxford.

There’s a massive blind spot on MN in treating Russell Group as an unquestionable marker of university quality or prestige. The RG is a lobbying group, not a measure of research quality.

you never hear REF chucked about like “Russel group” is yet it’s much more relevant if you care about quality

I guess it’s because on here universities are viewed solely as a function to secure “better” employment Which is understandable but only really part of questioning what quality means when you’re ranking universities

I didn't even know I went to a Russell Group university until I joined mumsnet.
Employers dont care what uni someone went to. Some may even be cautious of Oxbridge in case they are up themselves.

Those are skills that are built in numerous different ways by schools and universities across the board, not just in extra curriculars. A certain “type” of student will excel in those areas, and that type is far more likely to have a privileged background, or have been to private school and an oxbridge uni. It still is self selecting and, again, often has little to do with the actual ability to do a job.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 20/09/2026 15:57

@BoredZelda Why are people who work hard and are successful sneered at when their dc do well? We need strong achievers from all sectors to do well but those who earn more are entities to make choices that suit them and dc. Not all private school dc have come from the aristocracy or been born with a silver spoon in their mouths. Plenty of parents are just very good at what they do and are high earning. Many were state educated but don’t want that for dc.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the current university landscape, but there are plenty of Russell Group universities where students receive no face-to-face feedback on their work.

It's easy to be a first class honours student and never have to present work or have it critiqued in person.

Surely you can see how a student who has to do so three times a week will build skills that will transfer well to interview performance, as well as work that requires advocacy, diplomacy and/or negotiation.

@MeetMeOnTheCorner @HawaiiWake The A-level grades required for data science at Warwick are higher than the grades required for History at Cambridge.
For data science at Warwick, the most common grades are three A stars. You also need two A stars in Maths and Further Maths. This means the students are likely to have 4 A-levels with at least three A stars as most schools do not let students do Further Maths as a third A-level. Further Maths is also statistically the hardest A-level based on GCSE outcomes.
The most common grades for History at Cambridge is 2 A stars and an A. Students studying History at Cambridge are likely to only have 3 A-levels.
Statistically science subjects are also harder at A-level based on GCSE outcomes. The Data Science student will have statistically been less likely to get 4 A stars at A-level than a student doing Humanities A-levels.
The Warwick Data Science student should probably get the finance job based on mathematical capability.
You need lower grades for certain subjects at Oxbridge than you would need for more competitive STEM subjects at other universities like Warwick, LSE, UCL etc.

Surrey 25. Lancaster 26. Above several RG. But not seen that way….?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 20/09/2026 22:29

@fairyring25 You do know that msny students at Oxbridge don’t have the minimum quoted grades don’t you ? They are all “COWI” so hardly a discernible difference that anyone will care about.
