TV licence for uni halls

TV licence is it necessary. DC loves the traitors and also strictly. DH says he didnt need one when he was at uni 30 yrs ago. I know there is the loophole about watching it on a battery laptop but what if they want to watch BBC live on a TV. Do we bite the bullet snd pay out or just wing it?

You’ve alway needed on if you watch live TV, my DS is just using a laptop and watches YouTube so we haven’t worried.

Yes you need one. It’s a big con imo. Can you imagine how many tv licences in the hall of residences and all for 9 months a year.

You can watch live TV on an internally powered device as long as it isn’t plugged into the mains as well as streaming - provided a TV license is held at their main home address.

It's a con. Check the details in the rental agreement though. DD has had licenses included in her rental agreements. She still had a letter from the BBC reminding her that she needed a licence when she was in halls, but the rental agreement clearly stated that it was included. My DS's halls (different uni) don't have a TV licence, so each of the 12 kids on his corridor have to pay £100 and whatever each potentially.

They cannot watch any live TV, including sport on Sky etc without a TV licence
They cannot watch Traitors or anything else on BBC iPlayer without a TV licence on catch-up.

If they are watching Netflix or Disney or similar they don't need a TV licence.

Edit to add: just watched the link posted above. This seems to dispute what I've posted back on what we were told by both the uni accommodation team and TV licensing leaflets given out on move in day

Yes, you can watch it on an unplugged laptop. I agree with @NameChangeScotthough, they aren’t going to hunt her down.
