Just coming over here from the very helpful accommodation thread. A thread for parents/caregivers/supporters (or even 2026 starters themselves!)
My DS is going to study Computer Science and we’re from the Manchester area.

Can I cheekily ask about recommended hotels and restaurants for us parents doing the drop off? DS can't have all the fun!!

I stayed at the Leonardo (formerly Jury’s Inn) but there’s no parking although a five minute walk from the train station. Food wise can highly recommend Pani’s. It’s Italian. The food was lovely and food even lovelier! We went there for his graduation. Not particularly high end but MyDehli was really good for Indian food and not e pensive. Again lovely staff.

Have the uni owned accommodations started allocating move in slots? DS says he’ll get an email next week to invite him to do online induction then he can book a slot. Unfortunately such minimal notice is going to be a mare for getting time off work to bring him.

I know! I've managed to provisionally book off from 17 to 20th Sept so I can take DD but it would help if I knew which day we need to go! DD also said she is waiting for an induction email in order to book a slot.

We used The Bowes Incline hotel last time and will be using it again next month. It's in Birtley, about 30 minutes drive from Newcastle.
Paid £104 for a double room which includes a good breakfast, and is a pub/hotel/restaurant so you can get a meal the night before. Plenty of free parking too.

Popping on to recommend Long Friday restaurant in Jesmond for those asking for recs. incredible small plates sharing food.

See my post above regarding The Bowes Incline Hotel, really good value compared to hotels in the centre of Toon.
Also, there's a really nice burger restaurant in Jesmond called The Fat Hippo.
Jesmond is really buzzing. Nice little restaurants, wine bars etc.

I don't know how she found out, but my daughter got her slot for verde via the Downing Students app.

gingercat02 · 03/09/2026 15:11

Parents accommodation the Holiday Inn in Jesmond has covered parking and a good restaurant (Fratellos, a local Italian chain)

Agree with pp, Panis is lovely for a meal in town

TwigletTwig · 03/09/2026 15:48

For anyone with a YP in uni owned accommodation, the induction section is now live on the accommodation portal so you can book the moving in day and time slot.

Northernlurker · 03/09/2026 23:42

Dd booked her slot. We aren’t too far away so went for Saturday morning

We're going on Friday 18th with DD. 5 minute drop offs, fine to empty the car but where will be a guaranteed good parking place for us to move the car to whilst we help unpack? We have previously parked in Claremont road (I think) which is the nearest car park to Park View but I guess that will be full on moving day.

That was my plan, but I ended up parking in the Eldon Square multistorey - the spiral one.

Ok thanks I will have a look at that one, was it difficult to find space? I'd imagine there will be a lot of us parents doing the same thing at the same time.

Got a time slot of 8-12am to move in to Verde so now trying to decide whether to leave very very early (3 hour drive without a stop) or go the night before..

There’s nowhere on the mainland that is a 13 hour drive from Newcastle!

I’m from Newcastle & feel Pani’s is overpriced & overrated. Visitors to the city seem to like it.

It doesn’t say 13 hours? Just 3.

Well it’s showing up as 13 on my screen!

DS was at Newgate Court last year. Parking is very very limited outside so DH sat in the car while DS and I loaded up our festival trolley and got into the building. Check in was very straightforward but we had an hours’ wait for the lift. We used ‘Flat in a box’ and his bedding, towels, kitchen stuff etc was all waiting at Newgate for him.
Newgate was a great start for him but he’s got a house share in Jesmond this year. Be prepared - accommodation search for next year starts almost immediately and his was locked in by the end of October

What device are you using @Gall10 ?
It's showing as a bracket on my laptop, Samsung mobile and Kindle Fire.

Do you normally wear reading glasses?

Me too, I like it, I go for lunch with the work crew quite often. Granted we aren't short of Italian restaurants - Unos, Marco Polo, Pronto, Portofino, and more.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

There are major roadworks on the approach to and on the Tyne Bridge. I would try and avoid the area completely. Depending on where the halls are I would stay on the Western Bypass and come off after you have crossed the Tyne onto the A167. It is the second junction after crossing the river.

It was a polite question not an accusation @Gall10
Sorry if I have offended you. It wasn't my intention.

DD will be studying medicine at Newcastle and moving into Marris House on 19 September. We’re in West Yorkshire so not too far away. Really looking to exploring more of the area, I loved the city and campus on Open Day.

Wishing you all best wishes from a native Newcastle mum - my own kids are through and working now. The biggest worry is that many kids love it so much they never leave 🤔 Also it's very safe.
